Students in Mr. Jagow's 7th grade classes participated in an activity that included a standing long jump, which resulted in some rich, meaningful data. Following the brain-friendly movement activity students analyzed the results with a focus on various measures of central tendency. They also were able to watch a portion of President Biden's inauguration speech yesterday. #BeBrookwood #BrookwoodsBest

Our social/emotional focus for the month of January is Goal directed behavior. Being able to set and achieve a goal is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced throughout our lives. Everything that goes into setting and achieving goals (having a clear, specific vision of what we want to learn or accomplish; having a plan that we can actually carry out, tracking our progress along the way; and creating a timeline for reaching our goal so that we are reminded to stay on track) help to prepare us for work life, for higher education, and for contributing to our families and communities in ways that are meaningful for us. Check out our monthly family activity related to goal setting. Goal Directed Behavior - What is it? Goal-directed behavior is an important social/emotional life skill that involves more than just setting a goal - we learn quickly that goal setting is the easy part!! Goal-directed behavior has to also include: A definite set of steps we can carry out Coming up with ways to stay motivated, Creating a timeline for the goal, Tracking progress along the way so we can reflect on if our goal is being met or not! Like all social emotional skills, goal directed behavior is a life-long skill that can be taught and reflected on each time we set out to meet a goal and adjust as we learn what works and what doesn’t! As we start a new year, it is fun to think about new goals for you, your child and your family. Here is a fun activity to reflect on the year past and start your new year goal setting. It is important to think about the next steps needed (listed above) in order to complete that goal, which may look different for everyone!

Brookwood's Family Reading Challenge: Based on the Read 21 in '21 Challenge started by author and podcaster Gretchen Rubin, we want to challenge all of our Brookwood Families to read 21 minutes each day for 21 days in a row! Starting in kindergarten, if a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will hear 1.8 million words per year. They will have read for 851 hours by 6th grade and on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers. This is compelling data on the benefits of encouraging your child to read. The BrookwoodReads21 Challenge will begin on February 1st and end on February 21st. Families who sign up here will receive a #BrookwoodReads21 Magnet and optional sheet to track your progress. Families who complete the challenge will receive a cozy Brookwood Blanket to add some snuggly warmth to their winter reading! Sign up here: https://tinyurl.com/y2hlo6uw Here is a video about our Family Reading Challenge: https://tinyurl.com/yxlvesw6
