Congratulations to three Brookwood students whose artwork will be on display during the 99th State Education Convention on January 22 and 23, 2020 at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee. Over 3,000 attendees will have the opportunity to view the pieces that were created by young artists throughout the state. The theme for this year's art exhibit is Expanding Your Vision. Students were challenged to create an original piece of art depicting what it means to expand your vision. How do you expand your vision to live life to the fullest? The exhibit showcases the work of Wisconsin students in grades 7-12. Congratulations to our Brookwood students on their effort, time, and creativity! Participating students are Keegan Denecke, Nyah Traskaski, and Bryan Niles. #BrookwoodsBest

PVT Andrew Steele came to visit us before our winter break! Steele is an alumni of Brookwood Schools and just finished basic training and AIT. Grade 4-5 have been writing to him and asking many questions about being in the Army. Monica Steele, his mom, came in for Veteran’s Day to show pictures of what Andrew has been up to as well. Our students were beyond excited to finally meet him. #BrookwoodsBest We love having our Brookwood alumni stay connected with our district....if you are a Brookwood alumni and would like to get reconnected with us, please directly contact Helen Xiong at Helen.Xiong@gcj2.k12.wi.us

Grade 4 / 5 had their early Wisconsin gathering the last week of school before our winter break and participated in many 1800’s Wisconsin activities such as a mock 1870s school house including History, Spelling, Reading, Penmanship, Geography and Arithmetic. Students were also able to sample a variety of early Wisconsin dishes including wild rice soup, wassil, cranberry muffins, and homemade butter, jelly and bread. They played games that students would have played during that time period including jacks, cat’s cradle, checkers, and marbles. It was a fun day for all! #BrookwoodsBest

Did you know: “Researchers say about 60 percent of us make New Year's resolutions but only about 8 percent are successful in achieving them.” (Economy, 2019) Instead of setting a New Year’s resolution this year….set an achievable goal with your child and help them feel the joy of completing a task over time and learning goal setting from home. Examples: If your child doesn’t ever set the bed in the morning….don’t have them set a goal of setting their bed every morning…set an achievable goal of for the month of January that they will set their bed at least twice a week and keep track of it…if it goes well….in February, change it to three times a week…and celebrate the accomplishment. If trying or eating healthy foods is a task in your home….set a goal that each week that your family will try at least two new vegetables or fruits with dinner each week. Track your successes and celebrate the accomplishment! If your child is struggling with academics at school…..pick one subject area where they will stay after school once a week to get additional support. At the middle school, our teachers have after school academic support sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. If your child is at the elementary school, feel free to reach out the their teacher to see what kind of plan you can work on together to have your child be more successful. Overtime, your child will see that taking the extra time to get academic support will help them feel accomplishment in their classes. If spreading kindness is something you value….have your child value it as well….brainstorm some ideas that show acts of kindness that they can accomplish. Put all your ideas in a jar and once a week pull a slip or two out and do it! There are so many things you can do to help your child feel success and it all starts at home….don’t pick a New Year’s resolution this year….work with your child on setting achievable goals so they feel accomplishment and success! HELP share some ideas in the comments below on some achievable goals that can be accomplished from home!!! https://www.inc.com/peter-economy/10-top-new-years-resolutions-for-success-happiness-in-2019.html #BrookwoodsBest

This week in Mr. Dittner’s 6th grade math class, students have been working on writing and solving proportions. They were given a recipe that makes 6 sugar cookies. They were required to use proportions in order to figure out how much of each ingredient they would need in order to make enough cookies for the entire class. We’ll see how their cookies turn out!!! #BrookwoodsBest

For the past 10 years, our district has had a strong connection with the School Leaders Advancing Technology in Education (SLATE) Conference. We have not only been consistently sending teachers to learn and grow in their technology advancements at this conference but have also had the opportunity to be consistently chosen to lead and present there as well. At SLATE, our educators are able to share and network with other professionals the great things that our district is doing to move our students and the world of education with the use of technology forward. This year, the team of presenters were Heather Stanley, Caitlyn Kiefer & Helen Xiong. #BrookwoodsBest #slatewi

Students in Ms. Lind and Mr. Herman’s classrooms were challenged to solve a string of lights problem after studying series and parallel circuits. Students were to design a string of lights to solve a company’s customer issue to use the least amount of wire and the least amount of energy sources, so it would be the most profitable to manufacture. Teams were to simulate a burned out bulb and design and test different circuit designs that would make the customers happy with the company’s product. Here are some pictures of what the design teams came up with. #BrookwoodsBest
