Thanks to the Village of Genoa City, Brookwood students, and volunteers -- the 1st Annual School Forest Night Hike was a success! Families and individuals enjoyed the forest slightly lit up by recycled luminaries that were decorated by the students. At the end of the hike -- on the Tom Holden Trail was hot cocoa, snacks, and a warm fire! A few families took advantage of the park's playground as well! The forest was beautiful and the company was even better! We hope to see more people next year!

Brookwood Elementary KHC UPDATE! 122 of our families have learned about healthy hearts so far. 55 have learned Hands Only CPR while 42 have completed Finn’s Mission. We have raised $13,525 for the American Heart Association so far! Our GLOW event will take place during your students P.E. class on either Monday 2/12 or Tuesday 2/13. Students should wear sneakers, and anything that glows! Did you know that students who raise over $250 will also get to throw a Pie at a staff member of their choosing? We have 17 students who have already earned this incentive. If you have any questions please reach out to Mrs. Brenek through seesaw or email briana.brenek@gcj2.k12.wi.us http://www2.heart.org/goto/BrookwoodElementarySchoolGenoaCityWI1

Throughout the month of January, 3rd grade guidance classes spent the month learning about acceptance. The first two weeks they focused on differences/similarities, prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination, fair/unfair and inclusion and the second two weeks students were immersed in disability awareness activities with a focus on acceptance and inclusion. They learned about braille, how to write their names in braille and were introduced to wheelchair basketball; They learned about physical, visual, speech and auditory impairments autism, adhd/depression/anxiety as well as cognitive and learning differences. To conclude the disability awareness portion, students really enjoyed having a guest speaker who came in and taught them about service dogs, how service dogs help support people who have medical issues or different types of disabilities, what they do to help, their training and what to do (or not do) if you see a service dog.

The District is truly thankful for support of our families and community. Earlier this week, a group of volunteers on the community Readiness Team joined to work as a part of the Design Team on compiling the beginning looks to our Portrait of a Mustang. The work is going to be brought back to the students and staff for feedback and edits to ensure all parties have a say in this work to ensure all Mustangs are career, community,…life ready.

Hello Brookwood Elementary Families, It’s time to celebrate Kindness Week! We will kick off Kindness week on Friday, February 16th with an all school kindness pep assembly. Kindness week will run through February 23rd. The purpose of our annual kindness week is to celebrate the importance of kindness, understanding, empathy and acceptance. We are excited to share two new events added to our annual kindness week - National Random Act Of Kindness Day Participation and Classroom Service Projects! National Random Acts Of Kindness Day is on Saturday, February 17th. At the end of the Kindness kick off assembly, students will be given a pink slip of paper to bring home. They will be encouraged to do a “random act of kindness” for someone. This can be something the student does on their own, with a parent or it can be something done as a family. Fill out the pink slip and send it back to school on Monday (a picture of the student/family doing a RAK emailed to Mrs. Fitzsimmons is a bonus!). RAK pictures will be put into a slide show for students to see and RAK (Random Acts Of Kindness) slips will be read throughout the week during morning announcements Classroom Service Projects In the past, during kindness week, we have always done some sort of donation drive. Though our donation drives have always been very successful (thank you!) This year, we want students to be more involved. Grade levels/classrooms will be coming up with a community service project or a way to provide a random act of kindness that their students can actively participate in. How we need your help to make this the best experience for our students: your child’s teacher may be reaching out for help with 1. supplies to be able to complete their random act of kindness/community service project and/or 2. Volunteers to help students in the classroom prepare/carry out their random act of kindness/community service during Kindness Week. Along with working on their community service project/random act of kindness during this week, classrooms will be reading stories related to kindness and doing academic activities around the theme of kindness. See attached flier for Kindness Week themed days. ~Mrs. Fitzsimmons and Mrs. Nast *BMS will be doing their Kindness week in March, stay tuned for more information from BMS*

The 5 year old kindergartners are exploring how to be more independent with their math learning! While some work with the teacher on new math skills, the rest of the class is working on reviewing and practicing previous skills that are at their level. They love being able to use teamwork during math to discuss their answers and their thought process getting to that answer!

We are so excited for this exciting trip for our 4K! There is no regular 4K programming on this day as they learn about the different things in nature through a variety of sensory experiences. These exploratory and sensory activities will get participants to follow their curiosity and get an up-close look in their natural environments. Please dress for the weather as this experience is outdoors. 2/28 @Seno K/RLT Conservancy *please contact your child's 4K teacher for more information

Ms. Bullock attended the AIME (Active and Integrative Music Education) Conference at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point on Saturday. She was one of over twenty presenters for the day. Ms. Bullock presented her research into Teaching the Music of the Holocaust to Middle Schoolers and the benefits of the sociotransformative constructivism philosophy. That is taking what the students already know, making their learning relevant to the present, so they can apply it to their future learning. In addition to the music of the Holocaust unit in this manner, she teaches about the music of the Olympics, Morse Code, and many other topics. Way to make us Mustang Proud!!
